The AmazonNext UDC Design Challenge is to help students understand how to redesign a platform/app/product to be more inclusive to meet customer needs. It will be open to the students at AMIE HBCU colleges and universities and WBHR-LSAMP institutions. To participate in this, students need to form a team with (up to) 5 students across their own campus. Amazon and UDC pilot a program of opportunity to benefit underrepresented students' exposure, experience and skills and promote diversity initiatives in STEM with an investment of $420,000. DC team won the first prize at the 2022 AMIE Design Challenge Competition.
The top ten finalists were Hampton University, Morgan State, Jackson University, University of Maryland Eastern shore, Alabama A&M, Virginia State University, Prairie View A&M, Florida A&M, Tuskegee and UDC.
The Design Challenge was a part of Industry collaboration with AMIE and the expectation to demonstrate emerging technologies and how they are used to solve real-life problems. Each University team is judged based on design, problem solving, communication and business model. The UDC group came up with an innovative piezoelectric sensor-based device called “Gravicube”. UDC team clearly demonstrated leadership, innovative user-centric solution and out-of-the box thinking.
UDC had the interdisciplinary team of five students. Glacia Martin (Captain, Biomed)), Ciero Kilpatrick (Co captain, CS), Chidera Igwebuike (ME &CS), TaiZeree’ Walker (Electrical), Adrienne Lambert (IT).
The University of the District of Columbia and Microsoft Azure are developing the next tech leaders through the inaugural Tech Talks series from February 11 through May 13, 2022. UDC undergraduate students who participate in the cohort will have a unique opportunity to obtain work experience, network with Microsoft professionals and gain industry insights and knowledge into Microsoft's Azure program and careers.

UDC team won the second prize at the 2018 AMIE Design Challenge Competition. The design challenge is sponsored by IBM, Lockheed Martin and 7 other major corporations.
There were 12 competing Universities from all over the country. Our UDC team was truly interdisciplinary and their design was very appealing to the standing-room only crowd. There are individual cash awards and UDC gets a check for $2000.
