Message from the Dean

image of Dr. Devdas ShettyOn behalf of the faculty, staff, and students at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), I welcome you to one of the best engineering and computer science programs in the nation. This year marks a historical first for the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) in terms of graduating the first class of PhD students in Engineering and Computer Sciences. The fields of Civil, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science are among the fastest growing disciplines with high employability-rates. We have started new academic programs in Computer Engineering and Cybersecurity. School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) graduates are securing jobs and internships in top companies like Intel Corporation, Boeing, Google, Boston Scientific, US Patent office, Lockheed Martin, NASA, Naval research, to name a few.

SEAS prepares students for a variety of career opportunities through a combination of hands-on experience, exposure of state-of-the-art technologies, and the possibility of undertaking research before you graduate and get financially supported. Our students participate in national technical competitions and win awards. SEAS graduates secure jobs and internships in top companies. The students have the opportunity to conduct independent research with faculty as a part of their academic program and get financially supported. Several recent graduates are pursuing graduate degrees in the nation’s top Universities with full scholarship. With a college-culture of curiosity, critical thinking, and collaboration, we participate in cutting-edge research and creative opportunities with our world-class faculty.

Our faculty are dedicated professionals who excel in connecting with students and providing educational experience, not only getting the latest materials in the classroom but also creating opportunities for internship. SEAS has acquired several federally funded Centers of Excellence. Our faculty have received grants from National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Department of Energy (DoE, Department of Defense (DoD), Air Force Office of Sponsored Research (AFOSR), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Naval Surface warfare Center, DC Department on Aging and Community Living (DACL), National Security Agency (NSA) and Dept of Agriculture

The University had a leadership change in the past year. Dr. Maurice Edington assumed the post of President of UDC. Dr. Edington has created a new strategic plan for the University and SEAS is involved in developing our own pathway for excellence.

UDC engineers and CS scientists constantly being recognized for the values that have defined who we are, academic excellence, focus on well-being of our students and community. I have no hesitation in saying our students will be technological leaders of tomorrow.
