Master of Science in Counseling: Clinical Mental Health Counseling 

Sharpen your skills as a counselor by earning a Master of Science in Counseling degree with a concentration in Clinical Mental Health (CACREP accredited) at the University of the District of Columbia! As the only public institution of higher education in the District, we are excited to offer this unique academic program. 

As a student in the program, you will receive nuanced instruction and training that meets the needs of a multiethnic, pluralistic and linguistically diverse city like Washington, DC. Our curriculum and supervised training will provide you with a clinical counseling foundation utilizing a variety of learning experiences, meeting individuals, couples, and families where they are and enhancing their quality of life. Each experience strategically reinforces an integral value in multicultural competence for serving those experiencing mental, physical, emotional and social challenges.

As only one of two public counseling programs at UDC, it is our mission to provide you with a specialized learning experience, equipping you with all the skills and unique approaches you'll need to succeed in your profession. During your time in the program, we will prepare you to enter the field of counseling in a variety of settings such as:

  • Mental health clinics
  • Social service agencies
  • Hospitals
  • Substance abuse programs
  • Private industry
  • Government agencies
  • Employment centers
  • Private practice

As a student at UDC, you will have access to our helpful faculty members, as well as small class sizes (no larger than 15 students on average and a cap of 12 students per course while enrolled in the practicum and internship). Note: UDC’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program is a CACREP-accredited offering. We are no offering scholarships through the pathways to behavioral health.

Admission Requirements & How to Apply

Review the requirements listed below to ensure that you are eligible for admission. To qualify, you must have:

  • A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 for Mental Health and School Counseling
  • A minimum GPA of 2.7 for Rehabilitation
  • Submitted your application prior to April 15 for the fall semester, or prior to September 15 for the spring semester
  • Two professional references submitted along with your application

Note: The GRE is waived.
