AMP3 welcomes NNSA industries and laboratories to join Minority serving institutions to collaboratively develop the workforce in the additive manufacturing, materials engineering, and nanotechnology. AMP3 mainly focuses on research-based experiential learning and training to provide necessary skill sets to our students to be competitive in developing a career in highly selective industries and graduate programs to serve NNSA and USA needs. We welcome input and partnerships with other NNSA consortiums and industries to increase the impact of AMP3. Introduction
Additive Manufacturing Post Processing Partnership (AMP3) is a consortium of Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and Industry Partners led by the Mechanical Engineering Department (ranked as the best affordable mechanical engineering degree program in US) of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), which seeks to establish a pipeline of skilled workforce while solving the high impact technical problems tackled by the Department of Energy – National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE-NNSA) Laboratories and industry partners. The Partnership is being funded by the National Nuclear Security Administration of the Department of Energy with an amount of $2.7M. The MSIs in the consortium include:

Goal
The goal of Additive Manufacturing Post Processing Partnership (AMP3) is to produce 21st century minority workforce by leveraging Department of Energy (DOE)-National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) plant and lab-oriented research activities and, educational programs at ABET accredited MSIs located in 50-mile range and reaching out to distant colleges in mid-west USA like Lincoln University (LU).
Objectives
To pursue AMP3’s goal we are focusing on five objectives:
- Management: Manage consortium activities by coordinating a team of high caliber faculties and staff at different MSI campuses to economically accomplish high impact research, education, and outreach activities with measurable outcomes, while ensuring accountability towards funding agency, and continuous improvement with the help of External Advisory Board (EAB) and regular communication among consortium members.
- Recruiting students in AMP3: Get MSI students in the pipeline by conducting outreach activities on MSI campuses to attract students from electrical, mechanical, and other desired STEM fields, transferring students from non-ABET colleges and community colleges, and high school students interested in AM field.
- Education: Provide AMP3 focus education by leveraging existing courses at MSIs (e.g. Introduction to Engineering, Engineering Drawing, senior capstone), strengthening AM specific courses from the previous CAM consortium, facilitating graduate studies, and workshops on advanced skills not covered by the curriculum.
- Research: Conduct proposed research and senior design projects in collaboration with KCNSC, ORNL, and Y12 to provide DOE-NNSA related research training and credential to BS, MS, PhD, and postdoctoral scholars while addressing industrial scientific and technological challenges by engaging faculty expertise and empowering MSI leading to new knowledge of global significance and peer-reviewed journal and conference publications.
- Employability in DOE-NNSA: Increase student interest in joining DOE-NNSA industries by sending students for internships, research work, and industry-led workshops to KCNSC, ORNL, and Y12 and by hosting industry/lab scientists’ multipurpose visit at MSI campus to increase the awareness about DOE-NNSA labs industry and different career opportunities.
AMP3 conceptual framework conducting outreach activities to feed in the pipeline where MSIs and industry/lab partners collaboratively conduct education and outreach to produce 21st century workforce from MSIs.
