Research Week logoResearch is thriving across every part of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), including at UDC Community College (UDC-CC), where students are demonstrating that innovation knows no bounds. As part of Research Week 2025, March 31 to April 4, UDC-CC is showcasing a wide range of projects spanning from health care advancements to criminal justice reform and artificial intelligence (AI), and above all, the power of research to drive meaningful change.

“At UDC-CC, we are proving that great research can come from any background and is happening at every degree level,” says Assistant Professor of Natural Sciences Michael Ha. “Our students are tackling real-world challenges, from using AI to improve radiotherapy for cancer patients to analyzing public health disparities through D.C.’s mortality data. Others are exploring the dangers of plea bargains in the criminal justice system or the role of social media algorithms in shaping public opinion. This work isn’t just about academics—it’s about creating solutions that matter.”

UDC-CC Associate Dean Bushra Ahmad Saeed echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. “The integration of fields like AI with health care or criminal justice has the power to unlock solutions that are truly transformative,” Saeed shares. “Through these projects, our students are not only learning about complex theories but are actively applying them to address urgent societal needs. Research is the bridge between academic inquiry and real-world impact.”

A Platform for Discovery and Innovation

More than a showcase, Research Week is a celebration of curiosity and innovation. “It’s a chance for our students to step into the spotlight, share their discoveries and see that their work matters,” says UDC-CC Dean Marilyn Hamilton. “Whether they’re studying quantum teleportation and computing, investigating AI-driven health care improvements, or mapping social and racial disparities in health data, they are not just learning—they are leading.”

Research as a Tool for Problem-Solving

“Research transforms students into problem-solvers,” says Ha. “As each of these projects unfolded, we have seen them gain critical thinking skills, hands-on experience and the confidence to push boundaries. At UDC-CC, research isn’t just about the future—it’s about creating opportunities right now.”

“The ability of our students to apply research methodologies to solve tangible problems—whether it's improving urban health care access or understanding the social justice implications of new technologies—demonstrates the full potential of community-driven research,” Saeed adds. “It’s proof that innovation and problem-solving go hand in hand.”

Breaking Barriers in Research

As a community college and a pillar of the District’s only public university, UDC-CC is breaking barriers in research. “Research belongs to everyone,” says Hamilton. “Our students are tackling big ideas and real-world problems in emerging fields. We are proud to show that great research can and does come from every part of UDC.”

Saeed also emphasizes that "the diversity of our student body is a strength, bringing fresh perspectives to research that challenges the status quo and push the envelope of what's possible in every discipline.”
