Dr. Angela N. Bullock, program director and associate professor of Social Work in the Division of Education, Health and Social Work, was recently appointed by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) to be a member of the CSWECommission on Educational Policy (COEP) from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2025. COEP identifies pedagogical concerns in social work education and works with other CSWE bodies to address these issues. The Commission reviews current CSWE programs that are related to educational policy and planning and suggests activities that would strengthen and expand CSWE’s leadership role in matters of education. Finally, the Commission periodically writes a statement of the social work curriculum policy used by the Commission on Accreditation to formulate CSWE’s accreditation standards. Read more
Professor receives Best Teacher Award from The Roraima Institute
Paul Nehru Tennassee, an adjunct professor in the Crime, Justice and Security Studies and Political Science
& Global Studies Programs, received a Best Teacher Award from the Roraima Institute at Cara Lodge, Georgetown, Guyana, at the Cultural Public Citizen Diplomat Certificate event. Professor Tennassee designed, coordinated, and taught this course pro bono from September 2021 to June 2022. The course in Cultural Public Citizen Diplomacy (CPCD) enrolled over 20 teachers and others from Guyana. The CPCD graduates will now implement a grassroot community project. Read more.

UDC files first U.S. patent application with graduate student as coinventor
Submitted by Dr. Pawan Tyagi, professor of mechanical engineering and Wondwosen Demisse, a PH. D student majoring in mechanical engineering, this intellectual property filing has made history for being the first utility patent with a graduate student as a coinventor. One of several patents already filed this year, Dr. Tyagi credits the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Dean, Devdas Shetty, Dr. Victor R McCrary, vice president for research and professor of chemistry and Wayne Swann of the UDC Intellectual Property Office for their continued support.
